Feeding schedules by age
How much milk, how many solid meals, and what a realistic day looks like at each age. Milk stays the main source of nutrition until 12 months — solids are practice on top of it.
| Age | Milk feeds | Solid meals | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 months | 4 to 6 breastfeeds, or roughly 700 to 900ml of formula across the day. Milk stays the main source of nutrition until 12 months. | One meal a day to start, moving to two by around 7 months. Offer one or two soft foods and let your baby decide how much goes in. | Full schedule |
| 9 months | 3 to 5 breastfeeds, or roughly 500 to 700ml of formula. Milk is still important but takes up less of the day. | Three meals, plus a snack if your baby wants one. Include an iron-rich food at two meals a day. | Full schedule |
| 12 months | Around 350 to 500ml of whole cow milk a day, or continued breastfeeding for as long as it suits you both. More than 500ml tends to crowd out iron-rich food. | Three meals plus two snacks, mostly from the family menu. Keep salt low and skip added sugar. | Full schedule |
