Yogurt for babies

From 6 months low choking risk Common allergen

Yes, babies can have plain yogurt from around 6 months. Cow milk should not be given as a drink before 12 months, but yogurt and cheese in food are fine from the start of solids. Choose plain, unsweetened, full-fat yogurt.

6 months

Plain full-fat yogurt, thick enough to stay put. Pre-load a spoon and hand it over, or let your baby scoop with their hands — both are useful practice.

Let your baby hold the spoon and self-feed. Adding mashed fruit gives it more flavour without added sugar.

As the family eats it, with whole cow milk now fine as a drink too. Keep it unsweetened.

Choking risk

Yogurt is not a choking hazard. Watch the add-ins instead: whole blueberries, chunks of nut and dried fruit in flavoured pots are the risk, not the yogurt.

Allergen notes

Dairy is one of the nine common allergens. Offer yogurt on its own the first time, earlier in the day, when your baby is well. Keep it in the diet once tolerated. A baby with a diagnosed cow milk protein allergy should not have it — follow your pediatrician's plan.

Why it is worth offering

Yogurt is one of the few foods that suits both spoon-feeding and baby led weaning. Pre-loading a spoon and handing it over lets your baby lead while the yogurt actually reaches their mouth.

Yogurt questions parents ask

Can a 6 month old have yogurt?

Yes. Cow milk as a main drink waits until 12 months, but yogurt is fine from around 6 months as part of solids.

Which yogurt is best for babies?

Plain, unsweetened and full fat. Greek yogurt and plain whole-milk yogurt both work. Skip the pots marketed for children, which are usually sweetened.

Can babies have flavoured yogurt?

Better not. Flavoured pots carry a lot of added sugar. Stir in mashed fruit instead if you want sweetness.
